Summer is one of the busiest seasons of the year when it comes to travel and vacation. With the kids off from school, this makes now the perfect time to hit the open road, hop on a plane, or even set sail for a vacation full of memories. For many, vacation can be a source of stress when it comes to eating. Unfortunately, many feel that there are not enough healthy options out there for vacation eating.
The good news is that there are! You just have to know 1) where to look and 2) how to prepare. One place in particular that causes concern is the airport. You’re standing there during your layover, and your only options are fast food chains and restaurants that are serving up burgers and fries. Many families also express concern over the fact that on vacation, there doesn’t seem to be enough time to sit down and eat – not that they don’t want to, but there is so much more they’d rather be doing!
To help combat the stresses of healthy eating on vacation, we’ve got two great ideas for you:
• Plan ahead: One of the best things travelers can do is to think ahead. Packing a lunch is easy and it helps save money while encouraging healthy eating. It can be prepared food by you or healthy store-bought snacks, but either way, if you have that with you, there is a lesser chance you will feel compelled to eat outside of your healthy comfort zone.
• Choose the healthier options: Fast-food restaurants are more and more conscious of the fact that people are looking to be healthier. Although not your first choice, you may find yourself at a fast food joint at some point during your vacation. Check the menu for the healthier options instead of opting for burgers and fries.
Remember, vacation is about relaxing and enjoying yourself. If you find yourself wanting to splurge on calories and choose a less healthy option, just work it off at your hotel’s fitness center!
