Nevada DMV Fines

Uninsured drivers are a huge problem on our nation’s roads.  Most states have laws that require registered vehicles to carry auto insurance at all times. This is known as compulsory auto insurance and is a public policy consideration that benefits all vehicle owners.

Many times, drivers will purchase an insurance policy in order to register the vehicle, and then let the policy lapse. To combat this problem, the Nevada DMV developed the LIVE program which requires insurance companies to send electronic notification to them when an insurance policy is issued and then canceled/lapsed. When the DMV is notified of a canceled policy, the LIVE system triggers a series of notifications to the vehicle owner, starting with a postcard and then moving on to a certified letter.

If a vehicle is shown to have a lapse in coverage, Nevada imposes a tiered system of fees and fines. The below matrix shows the penalties based on the number of lapses and length of time that has passed between policies.
