Nevada Insurance Discounts

| Blog.

Auto and home insurance can be expensive, especially in a high-rate state like Nevada (and more specifically the Las Vegas area).    To make sure you are getting the best value for your insurance dollars, we constantly look for discounts that can be applied to your policy.   The following are examples of discounts that you should be aware of and ask for, if they apply to your situation:

Auto Insurance

  • Good student – available for youthful drivers (up to age 24) that are attending school and have at least a 3.0 GPA
  • Driver training – if your young driver has taken a behind-the-wheel safety course, a discount of around 10% can be applied.
  • Student away at school – if you have a household member that needs to continue carrying auto insurance, but is away at college and does NOT have a vehicle for regular use, we can apply a substanial credit.
  • Occupation – many insurance companies give a credit to specific occupations such as teachers, police, military, firefighters, scientists and engineers and other civil servants.  Make sure to ask if you occupation qualifies.
  • Education level – a few insurance companies will give you a small discount if you have a college degree, or other specialized education.
  • Homeownership – simply owning a home qualifies for credit on your auto insurance.
  • Multi-Policy – combining your auto and home policies with the same insurance companies typically provides a huge credit, up to 25% in some cases.
  • Multi-Car – having all your vehicles with the same insurance insurance company provides up to a 20% discount.
  • Length of residence – the longer you’ve been at your current address, the larger the credit.
  • Prior coverage limits – if you’ve carried higher than average limits in the past, you may qualify for a credit on a new auto insruance policy.
  • Continuous prior insurance – having no gaps in coverage for many years qualifies you for a credit.
  • Paperless – some insurance companies give you a credit for agreeing to have all policy correspondence emailed to you, or accessed online.   Who doesn’t want to eliminate paper?
  • Alarm system or LoJack – if you’ve installed a passive alarm, LoJack or OnStar, you qualify for an anti-theft discount on your comprehensive coverage.
  • Excellent credit – while not a discount specifically, your excellent credit will have a dramatic affect on your overall Nevada auto insurance rates.

Homeowners Insurance

  • Gated community – if you live behind bars (the good kind…) you qualify for a discount.
  • Protective devices – alarm systems, especially if they are monitored, can provide up to a 20% discount.
  • Age of home – new homes have less claims and therefore qualify for a large rate discount.
  • Claim free – the longer it has been since your last homeowners claim, the larger the discount.
  • Green construction and appliances – Travelers Insurance company gives a credit if you can show your home is full of energy star rated appliances, windows, etc.
  • Occupation – as with auto insurance, many occupations qualify for a discount.
  • Credit score – if you have excellent credit, expect to pay less for homeowners insurance.
  • Multi-policy – combining your homeowners insurance and auto insurance together yields a 10% to 15% discount on the home policy.
  • Retiree – if you are retired, many insurance companies give you a discount on homeowners insurance.
