Working for a transportation network company like Uber or Lyft can be a fantastic opportunity in a town like Las Vegas. However, it is critical you understand how Uber and Lyft insurance coverage works and fill the gaps. We can provide you with affordable rideshare insurance that protects you while working for Uber or Lyft.
Understand Uber and Lyft Insurance Coverage
Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare companies or TNC’s offer contracted drivers two types of insurance coverage, depending on status. There are 4 status types or “periods” recognized by insurance carriers:
- Offline, where the vehicle is driven solely for personal use and the rideshare app is not active.
- Period 1, where the driver has activated the ride-share app and is ready to accept a passenger.
- Period 2, where the driver has accepted a passenger request and is en-route for pick-up.
- Period 3, where the passenger is being driven to their destination.
Uber and Lyft both provide coverage of $50,000/$100,000 of bodily injury and $25,0000 of property damage coverage during Period 1. This is contingent coverage, meaning it pays only if your personal auto insurance will not. Uber and Lyft do not provide coverage for damage to your vehicle during Period 1.
Once you have accepted a passenger, Period 2, and into Period 3, Uber and Lyft provide $1M of liability coverage, $1M of uninsured motorist coverage and contingent comprehensive and collision.
