Quick Vacation Ideas Before School Starts

For most families in Las Vegas, school starts again on August 24th.   That means the time to squeeze in a family vacation is getting short.   If you only have time for a quick day or two trip, we have a few suggestions that are close to Las Vegas, inexpensive and absolutely worth the drive:

Zion National Park

Zion National Park is located about 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, making it ideal for a day trip.  If you’ve never been, add it to your “must do” list for this month.   The scenery is nothing short of spectacular with towering sandstone mountains and incredible scenic drives.   The weather can be warm this time of year so dress accordingly and take plenty of water.

Slide Rock State Park

This little gem is located in Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona Arizona.   The drive takes about 4 hours so it  might be better for an overnight trip.  Fortunately affordable accomodations can be found in Sedona or Flagstaff Arizona.   Slide Rock is a series of natural water slides formed into the sandstone.   It is affordable and family friendly and, best of the all, the cool mountain stream water feels great on a warm summer day.

Ely and Great Basin National Park

If you are willing drive a little further – around 4.5 hours – you can spend the weekend at Great Basin National Park, near Ely Nevada.  It’s worth the drive to see the scenery, including beatiful lakes, Mt. Wheeler and Lehman Caves.  If you stay in Ely, NV make sure you take ride on the Northern Nevada Railway, an historic steam train that runs to the copper mine near Ruth Nevada.  Beware – the train might just get “robbed” en route.   Ely is a quaint and interesting town with lots of history.  Plan to spend a few days in Ely and Great Basin!

Sequoia and Kings Canyon

If you are inclined to head west, these two parks are worth the drive.   There are 14 campgrounds in the area and both parks are less busy compared to Yosemite.  The scenery and giant trees are amazing and you’ll love the cool weather.   Campground reservations are recommended.

A Vegas Staycation

Lastly, have you considered a Vegas staycation?   With inexpensive hotel rooms, incredible swimming pools and shows, our hometown might be the perfect place to stay and play.   Use a service like Priceline or Hotwire to find a cheap room and get away from home for a day or two.    Check out tix4tonight.com to find discounts on top Vegas shows.   It might seem weird, but staying in your hometown, away from home, might be the quick and inexpensive vacation you need to finish the summer.
